EXPERIENCE

Linux Systems Developer, Wyse, San Jose, CA, contract (EWork), May,
2004 - October, 2004:
    Part of a team developing an embedded Linux solution for thin
    clients. Adapted various open source packages to the trimmed down
    environment of an embedded distribution. Wrote various shell scripts
    to act as glue to the embedded gui. Wrote design and testing
    documentation for the implementations of Linux packages. 

Linux Systems Developer, Nuasis, San Jose, CA, contract 
(Transquest/Enherent), February, 2003 - March, 2004:
    Analysis, design, maintenance and administration of over 100
    enterprise Linux servers. Migrated servers from RedHat 7.1 to ES3,
    including custom kickstart CDs and templatized diskettes. Developed
    utilities in perl, including templates and configurations for
    Nagios, MRTG, and basic system configurations. Packaged utilities
    and numerous CPAN modules into rpms, including writing or modifying
    spec files. Wrote custom plugins for Nagios. Extensive
    troubleshooting of system and software upgrade issues for a tightly
    integrated product. 24x7 on-call. 

Consultant, Bay Area, CA, June 2001 - Present:
    Various minor contracts, including PC system troubleshooting,
    software installation, and Debian Linux installation and
    administration. 

Unix System Administrator, Nominum, Inc, Redwood City, CA, January 2001
- June 2001:
    Administered approximately 25 systems, mixed Solaris and NetBSD, for
    Nominum's GNS service, including monitoring (with Netsaint),
    configuration and upgrades. Assisted internal IS with trouble
    tickets. Set up Netsaint (now Nagios) to use escalation and email
    paging triggers. Compiled and installed software, wrote shell and
    Perl scripts for automation and troubleshooting. Documented
    processes and installations. On call as needed. 

Unix Systems Developer, Global Crossing, Sunnyvale, CA, August 2000 -
December 2000:
    Installed UNIX and Linux operating systems and customized
    environments. Installed and diagnosed Sun and Intel based hardware.
    Compiled, configured, and installed software. Handled job control,
    user addition, and other system administration tasks. On call duty
    as needed. 

Release Engineer, Uniteq, contract (MindSource Software), Redwood City,
CA, February 2000 - July 2000:
    Developed, updated and maintained various Perl scripts, shell
    scripts and CVS implementations for a build and release environment.
    Diagnosed developer issues with CVS and the build system. Replicated
    the build environment on a second server for shipment overseas,
    including configuration and software installation. Documented build
    environment in HTML on intranet. Acted as secondary sysadmin and
    network admin. 

Consultant, Real Communites, Cupertino, CA, December 1999 - January
2000:
    Hired as a 1099 contractor to come in and turn designer's "roughs"
    into standardized HTML code with cascading style sheets. Developed
    style sheets that worked in both MSIE and Netscape. 

Network Audit Technician, Cisco Systems, contract (SDC), San Jose, June
1998 - December 1999:
    Wrote Perl/CGI scripts and web pages (raw HTML in Notepad or Emacs)
    for department intranet use. Scripts developed included web-based
    "white board" application and back-end parsers for flat files under
    UNIX. Wrote Tcl/Expect and Perl scripts to automate network tasks.
    Analyzed networks by running scripts in Crosstalk on StrataCom
    equipment. Formatted and evaluated data using various office
    software (MS Office, Harvard Graphics, Visio). Generated simple
    graphics for internal use. 

Various Temporary Positions, Miscellaneous agencies, Sept 1997 - June
1998:
    A variety of temporary jobs, including Tech Support/Help Desk,
    telephone surveys, and insurance company call center for disaster
    (El Nino) assistance. 

Staff Engineer, Acurex Environmental, Mountain View, CA 1990 - 1997:
    Wrote technical reports using MS Word and Excel, including emission
    factor generation and emission estimation. Performed environmental
    testing using EPA methods as needed. Software support on MS Office,
    hardware and software setup and troubleshooting on laptops and PCs.
    Performed network backup support. Developed computer applications
    with macros and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Performed data
    reduction and analysis with Excel.

    * Built first web site in 1996 on GeoCities, now moved to

      HTML, and set up another personal site

      learned Tcl and CSS, and in 2000 picked up CVS and IRIX. In 2001

      brought the addition of Oracle SQL skills and Debian Linux kernel
      tweaking and compilation. 2003 delved into rpm development and
      kickstart development. 2004 explored the embedded space, and
      printer oddities.
